Cutlers — Interview Playbook

Why this page exists

The original Manus link went down (server error) the night before the interview. This is that brief, rehosted here so it can't disappear again. The content is preserved as written.

Read it alongside the five points on the main work brief — those cover the things this document doesn't: the leaving answer, your verified pay figures, the towing vocabulary you already own, Cutlers' FCA authorisation, and the C1 licence question.

Three corrections before you learn the opening

1 · Don't say "I saw how a family firm protects its name." The haulage business finished around 2010 — you were about five. They can do that maths. Say instead: "I grew up in a family business. My grandad was in haulage and my dad ran the transport side — over 150 vehicles across five depots — and after that the family business was training, which is the one I actually grew up around. My grandad had a forty-acre farm as well, bred horses, ATVs and trailers about the place." All true, nothing to pick apart.

2 · The figures are 150+ vehicles across five depots — not "over 100 across more than five". If it's worth saying, say it right. The business was Professional Handling Withcare — PHW.

3 · The family contacts are one sentence, not a strategy. Andrew for equine, your dad for motorsport and hospitality. Say "I'm not turning up cold, I can open a few doors" only if they ask about growth. Don't lead with it — the advert wants someone self-motivated who works independently. Lead with 155.

£27,500 self-employed is NOT £27,500 employed — the actual numbers

The advert is labelled full-time AND self-employed. Those are two different jobs wearing the same headline. Work out which one it is before you talk about money. Figures are 2026/27 rates.

Start with the surprise: on tax alone, self-employed is slightly BETTER.

On £27,500Employed (PAYE)Self-employed
Income tax£2,986£2,986
National Insurance£1,194 (Class 1, 8%)£896 (Class 4, 6%)
Cash in hand£23,320£23,618

Self-employed keeps £299 more. Anyone selling you self-employment stops there. Here is everything they leave out.

What you lose, priced:

What goesWhat it is worth
5.6 weeks’ paid holiday — the legal minimum, which self-employed people simply do not get£3,319 a year
Employer pension — 3% of qualifying earnings, free money on top of your wage£638 a year
Accountant and public liability insurance — costs you now carry yourself~£550 a year
Sick pay — from April 2026 SSP pays from day one; self-employed gets nothing£0 if you break an arm
Notice pay — a month’s notice is worth £2,292; a contractor can be stood down on the spotno protection
Redundancy paynever accrues
Unfair dismissal protection — read the red note below, this one matters most to younever applies

The equivalence. To match £27,500 employed you would need to invoice about £31,700 — and that is before putting any price at all on sick pay, notice, redundancy or unfair dismissal. Price those realistically and it is £33,000–£35,000.

So £27,500 self-employed is worth roughly £22,000–£24,000 as a proper job. Not £7,500 more than Burton’s £20,000 basic — more like £2,000–£4,000 more. And that is below or barely level with Big Motoring World’s £23,000, which is PAYE.

🔴 The bill nobody warns you about. Self-employed tax is not taken as you go. Your first self-assessment payment would be about £5,823 in one go on 31 January — the year’s tax and NI of £3,882 plus a £1,941 payment on account for the year ahead. That is more than every penny you have. Go self-employed and you must put roughly £1 in every £4 aside from day one and not touch it.

🔴 And the one that should settle it. You were dismissed four days ago after two years, with no proper process. The only reason you have any remedy at all is that you were an employee. From 1 January 2027 the qualifying period for unfair dismissal drops from two years to six months — so someone starting as an employee in August 2026 is protected within months. A self-employed contractor is never protected, however long they stay. Of everyone in Britain who should refuse a self-employed label this month, you are near the top of the list.

Worth knowing: calling it self-employment does not make it so. If Cutlers set your hours, provide the premises and the stock, expect you personally rather than anyone you send, and you work for nobody else, HMRC can treat it as employment whatever the paperwork says. That is mainly their problem — but see the written terms and run HMRC’s free CEST tool before signing anything.

Full four-way comparison — Burton, Cutlers PAYE, Cutlers self-employed and Big Motoring World, with take-home for each — is on the money page.

How to ask — after the selling conversation, not before:

“The advert said full-time and also self-employed — can I check which it is? I’m not fussy about the label, I just want to understand the package properly. Is it PAYE with holiday and pension, or a contract for services?”

If he says PAYE — good, that makes Cutlers the better of your two offers on guaranteed money. If he says self-employed, don’t argue and don’t walk. Say “that’s fine, I’d just want to see the written terms before I commit”, then ask what the rate would be — because a genuine contractor rate should be £32,000-plus, not £27,500.

Verified from primary sources — 31 July 2026

Everything below was checked directly against Companies House and the FCA's own published data, not taken from any brief. Company number 09735575, incorporated 17 August 2015.

1 · Jack Cutler is 34, and he owns the company outright. Companies House lists him as the sole person with significant control, holding 75% or more of the shares, notified 7 April 2016. Date of birth May 1992. David and Lesley Cutler are directors but hold no PSC entry.

That changes how to read the role. The advert says you'd work "closely with the Managing Director" and "take ownership of the day-to-day sales function" — and a customer review names Jack as the person who sold to them. Jack is currently the salesman. He is hiring to get his own time back. That's a much stronger position for you than filling a vacancy: he needs someone he trusts with his own customers, and he is the only person who has to say yes.

2 · There are zero charges registered against the company. No debenture, no stocking loan, no invoice finance, nothing secured — "0 charges registered, 0 outstanding". For a dealer carrying £1.2m of stock that is a genuinely good sign: the stock is unencumbered and no bank has a floating charge. Read the 0.23 quick ratio in that light — it's a stock-heavy balance sheet funded conservatively, not a business in trouble.

3 · The accounts are "total exemption full accounts" — the small-company, audit-exempt regime. That is why there's no turnover, margin or profit to see. It isn't concealment; that size of company simply doesn't have to file it. Latest filed 8 January 2026 for the year to 31 August 2025, and everything is filed on time with no late notices.

4 · Four used trailers are listed on their website. Against £1.2m of stock on the balance sheet. Priced £2,950 to £22,499, some plus VAT, some no VAT. The hire fleet is 11 units at £60–£250 per day or week plus VAT.

Now re-read the job advert: "Advertise new and used stock across our website and online sales platforms. Keep all website stock listings accurate, up to date and professionally presented. Write engaging and accurate product descriptions." Three of the twelve responsibilities are about online stock presentation. They know it's thin. You built and ran listings on Auto Trader and Caravan Finder for two years. That is the single most direct match between what they need and what you have done — and it is worth more airtime than the family story.

5 · The FCA number is real, but the permission is narrower than we assumed. FRN 934652 confirms as CUTLERS SALES AND HIRE LIMITED, status Authorised — but the permission recorded in the FCA's published data is "Providing Credit Information Services", which is not the same thing as credit broking. Their website does run a finance calculator, and much trailer business is to farms and contractors where business lending falls outside consumer credit rules anyway.

So don't assert anything about their finance set-up — ask. "Do you broker the finance in-house or refer it out?" Then offer what you actually hold: SAF Approved and finance approved, already vetted to arrange lending with external providers. Offer it as capability, not as a comment on their permissions.

Two smaller things. The registered office is a house at Whitewood House, Sich Lane, Yoxall DE13 8NS — you'd be working at Hunterscroft Farm, Dunstall Lane, Barton under Needwood DE13 8BN. And Jack was a director of Aldridge Containers Ltd from November 2010, aged about 18 — so he has been running companies since he left school. He will respect someone who sells hard at 21.

CUSTOMER-HOURS PROOF

Henry has worked every weekend for the past two years and taken two weekdays off. He already understands that high-value customers, shows and demonstrations may require an agreed rota and contact outside conventional office hours.

MY POTTED HISTORY · 45–60 SECONDS

Family business. Farm grounding. Measured sales.

“My father, Ade, and my grandfather ran our family haulage business together; it grew beyond 100 trucks across more than five depots. I saw how a family firm protects its name, shares responsibility and responds when customers need it. After the sale, the family moved into training, building relationships across construction, plant and licensed premises. My grandfather also had a 40-acre farm where he bred horses and kept ATVs, so trailers, machinery and livestock are familiar environments. That is context, not technical qualification. I combine it with a measured sales record and will still learn Cutlers’ exact products properly.”

This is authentic context, not a qualification claim. Henry should say he grew up around these environments—not that he has professionally sold horseboxes, operated every machine or already knows every legal and technical detail.

WHY THIS HELPS CUTLERS

Biography becomes useful only when it improves the customer conversation.

FAMILY HAULAGE

Ade and Henry’s grandfather built a 100-plus-truck operation across more than five depots.

Henry grew up seeing personal reputation, customer memory, shared responsibility and customer-led decisions at meaningful scale.

40-ACRE FARM

His grandfather bred horses and kept ATVs alongside plant, machinery and trailers.

Equine, agricultural and towing customers are familiar environments rather than abstract market segments.

TRAINING BUSINESS

After haulage was sold, the family moved into training.

Explains the later construction, plant and licensed-trade relationships available for consented introductions.

CUSTOMER HOURS

Henry has worked every weekend for two years, taking weekdays off.

Already understands that customers, events and demonstrations do not always fit office hours.

THE INTERVIEW POSITION

Sell the proof—not the predicament.

Henry brings a complete high-ticket sales process, finance confidence and a documented annual result. He does not need to pretend he already knows every horsebox. He needs to show that he has begun learning and can convert technical detail into clear customer questions.

WHAT

Lead with 155 units, the full sales cycle and attachment behaviour.

HOW

Use one example, one number and one lesson in each answer.

WHY

Cutlers needs a commercial operator who can learn products—not a catalogue recital.

CV PROVENANCE

They saw the process. Not the numbers.

Cutlers received Henry’s original CV. It explains the full sales process but does not contain the later quantified performance evidence.

EMAIL DRAFT

Updated CV ahead of our interview – Henry Whetton

Hi [Name],

Thank you again for inviting me to interview for the Sales Executive role on [day/date].

When I applied, I sent an earlier version of my CV. I have since updated it to quantify my sales performance and describe my full enquiry-to-handover responsibilities more clearly. The underlying experience is unchanged; this version presents the evidence more accurately.

I have attached the updated CV for your reference ahead of our meeting. I look forward to discussing how my high-value sales experience, product-learning approach and customer follow-up could translate to Cutlers’ trailer, horsebox and ATV range.

Kind regards,

Henry Whetton

THE ADVERT, TESTED

Six claims to turn into questions.

The supplied Indeed advert is a sales pitch, not the employment agreement. Henry should understand it closely, then use the interview to replace ambiguity with facts.

01Status does not reconcile

WHAT IT SAYS

Indeed labels the role both full-time and self-employed; the body says full-time and uses salary language.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Ask whether this is PAYE employment or a genuine contract for services, then request the written terms before deciding.

02OTE is not a formula

WHAT IT SAYS

£27,500 basic, £50,000+ realistic OTE and uncapped commission are stated, but no rate, threshold, payment timing or historic attainment is shown.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Ask for the commission schedule, average and median earnings, lead ownership, cancellations and when commission becomes payable.

03The experience bar is inconsistent

WHAT IT SAYS

The text says five years preferred; the application field says three years required. Henry has two concentrated years.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Do not dodge the gap. Counter with 155 units, two volume bonuses and direct evidence across every responsibility in the advert.

04This is the day-to-day sales function

WHAT IT SAYS

The role owns enquiries, quotations, follow-up, demonstrations, handovers, stock adverts, product descriptions, accessories and busy telephone cover.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Map each duty to Burton Caravan Centre and ask what admin, pricing and handover support actually exists.

05Saturday and field work matter

WHAT IT SAYS

Saturday availability, shows, demonstrations and customer visits are part of the role.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Use two years of working every weekend—with two weekdays off—as direct evidence of flexibility. Then ask for the normal rota, events, travel, expenses and rest-day arrangement.

06Training is promised

WHAT IT SAYS

Cutlers says it and the manufacturers provide full product training; Sage and towing are advantages rather than stated essentials.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Ask what happens in weeks one to four, which manufacturers deliver training and how competence is checked before solo quotations.

RESEARCH THE OFFICIAL BRIAN JAMES RANGE

THE METHOD

Learn the decision—not every brochure.

Henry should be able to run this sequence on any trailer, horsebox or machine. Product accuracy comes from the right discovery questions and checking the specification—not bluffing.

01What job must the product do?

02What must it carry—and what is the real payload?

03What vehicle will tow it, and is the licence entitlement right?

04How will it be loaded, secured, stored and serviced?

05Which safety, warranty, finance and part-exchange details decide the purchase?

PRODUCT RECOGNITION LAB

Name it. Spot it. Qualify it.

These are recognition cues—not substitutes for the plate, handbook or manufacturer specification.

01Plant trailer

SPOT IT

SPOT IT

Ventilated body with gates, partitions and washable livestock floor.

LIKELY BUYER

Farmers and livestock handlers.

ASK

Species, numbers, loading system and cleaning routine?

NEVER GUESS

Never treat animal transport as ordinary cargo.

MACHINE TYPES

Know what the customer is moving or using. ATV / quad

IDENTIFY

Straddle seat, handlebars and four low-pressure tyres.

TRAILER / SALES IMPLICATION

Confirm dimensions, weight, road status and secure loading; CFMOTO CFORCE is the relevant family.

UTV / SSV

IDENTIFY

Side-by-side seats, steering wheel, roll structure and often a rear cargo bed.

TRAILER / SALES IMPLICATION

It is wider and heavier than an ATV; confirm passengers, cargo, towing work and transport dimensions.

Mini digger

IDENTIFY

Tracked excavator with boom, dipper and bucket; it may carry several attachments.

TRAILER / SALES IMPLICATION

Use actual transport weight, track width, buckets, ramp geometry and restraint points to specify a plant trailer.

Roller / compactor

IDENTIFY

One or more steel drums designed to compact ground or surfacing.

TRAILER / SALES IMPLICATION

Concentrated weight, drum width, ramp grip and stable loading matter more than a generic machine label.

Site dumper

IDENTIFY

Compact site vehicle with a front skip for moving soil, rubble or aggregate.

TRAILER / SALES IMPLICATION

Confirm transport—not loaded—weight, width, ground clearance, ramp angle and restraint points.

RESEARCH + REHEARSAL

Six actions before interview.

01Open every official range link and write one sentence on the customer job—not the marketing slogan.

02Identify twelve product photographs without reading the title; name the visual clue that decided it.

03Choose one construction, motorsport and equestrian stock unit and note payload, dimensions, loading and buyer questions.

04Practise the universal five-question sequence aloud until it sounds conversational rather than memorised.

05For two unfamiliar specifications, say: ‘I do not want to guess; I would check the plate or manufacturer data.’

06Take the one-page product matrix to interview and explain how Henry built it from Cutlers’ own sources.

RELATIONSHIP-LED SALES

Warm doors. Earned outcomes.

POST-HAULAGE TRAINING NETWORK

Warm construction and plant relationships.

After the family haulage business was sold, Henry’s family moved into training. That later training work created many trusted relationships across construction, plant and licensed premises. Ade Whetton also has his own former motorsport relationships. Their contribution is to open the relevant contacts list and ask each person whether a warm introduction would be welcome—not to transfer a database or bring a crowd to Cutlers. Henry must then earn the relationship through useful discovery, accurate advice and follow-up. Access never guarantees an order.

“After our family haulage business was sold, my family moved into training. That work created many relationships across construction, plant and licensed premises, while my father, Ade Whetton, separately has his own former motorsport contacts. I would not present any of those people as leads. With permission, the right family member would ask whether an individual introduction was welcome. I would then understand the requirement, match only relevant current stock, follow up and earn any sale or referral.”

SPECIFY SAFELY

Never recommend a trailer from equipment name alone. Confirm the machine’s actual transport weight, attachments, trailer payload, plated limits, tow-vehicle capacity, combined weights, licence entitlement, loading method and load restraint.

DISCOVERY QUESTIONS

Qualify the job before the trailer.

01What do you move now, including every attachment carried with it?

02What are the actual transport weight, width and length—not just the model name?

03Which van or pickup tows it, and what are its plated towing and train-weight limits?

04How often does it move, across what distance and into what type of site access?

05What fails with the current setup: payload, ramps, security, downtime, storage or finance?

06When would a replacement need to earn its keep, and who makes the decision?

01Week 1

Agree the rules

HOW

Ask Cutlers which current plant and work-trailer units, geography and lead-recording process matter. Obtain permission and approved facts before anyone is contacted.

PROOF

A short priority-stock list, product guardrails and a lead-source code.

02Week 2

Open ten trusted doors

HOW

Ade asks selected contacts whether a direct introduction to Henry would be welcome; no database, bulk message or private customer information is transferred.

PROOF

Ten consented introductions with only the context needed for a useful first conversation—not ten assumed leads.

03Week 3

Earn the conversation

HOW

Henry contacts each person individually, listens before recommending, checks actual weights and shares only relevant current Cutlers stock after the specification is verified.

PROOF

Useful conversations, qualified requirements and agreed next actions—not pressure or catalogue dumping.

04Week 4

Close the referral loop

HOW

Follow up every promise, report opportunities honestly and ask satisfied contacts who else faces the same transport problem.

PROOF

Conversations, quotes, orders, lost reasons and consented referrals—never a claim that access guaranteed sales.

MAJOR SELLING POINT · HENRY’S UNCLE ANDREW

Henry’s uncle Andrew opens a trusted equine door

Andrew has established relationships within the equine community. With each person’s permission, he can introduce Henry individually to owners and operators whose real transport needs may suit Cutlers’ current Equi-Trek or Cheval Liberté range.

Equi-Trek Cheval Liberté

“My uncle Andrew has established relationships in the equine community. I would not call those people leads or promise orders. With their permission, Andrew could make individual introductions; I would then listen to the horse, journey, licence, payload, layout, storage and budget requirement, check the specification with Cutlers and earn the relationship through accurate follow-up.”

FIRST-30-DAYS PILOT

In the first 30 days, learn the two equine ranges and Cutlers’ qualification rules. With management approval, Andrew then asks up to five relevant contacts whether an introduction is welcome. Henry records the requirement and next action, follows up individually and reports conversations, quotations, lost reasons, sales and referrals without treating access as an order book.

GUARDRAIL

Andrew opens the door; Henry and Cutlers must still earn trust. No contact data is transferred without permission, no yard event is proposed and no horse-welfare or towing specification is guessed.

TWO OTHER DISTINCT ROUTES

Motorsport and hospitality.

Ade opens only the relevant motorsport or licensed-trade contact list and asks whether an individual introduction is welcome. Henry owns the discovery, matching and follow-up; nobody is being invited to a Cutlers yard event.

ADE WHETTON’S MOTORSPORT ROUTE

Ade’s racing relationships meet Brian James

NATURAL FIT

THE WARM DOOR

These are Ade Whetton’s own former motorsport relationships. Ade can create consented introductions to car racers, motorcycle racers, teams and enthusiasts, many of whom already recognise or use Brian James equipment.

“I can see a measured route into motorsport through warm relationships. I would not treat those contacts as sales; I would use the introduction to qualify the vehicle, loading, clearance, protection and paddock problem, then earn the referral through good follow-up.”

CURRENT CUTLERS HIRE-FLEET IMAGE

HOSPITALITY CONTINUITY

Cold-room failure creates urgent hire demand

NATURAL FIT

Cutlers’ current hire fleet includes a Fridge and Freezer Trailer. Its live card says to call for rates and availability.

THE WARM DOOR

Ade’s training delivery into licensed establishments created warm relationships with pubs, restaurants and hospitality operators locally and nationally.

“There may be a useful continuity route into licensed premises that already know my father. If a cold room fails or planned maintenance removes capacity, Cutlers already has a relevant hire unit. I would qualify the requirement and availability carefully rather than promise a response we had not confirmed.”

YARD EQUIPMENT · OPTIONAL LATER

Cutlers’ yard telehandler—optional competence later

The telescopic handler visible at Cutlers is the company’s own yard-handling machine. It is used to unload incoming trailers or machinery and move stock around the yard, including with a ball hitch. It is not a Cutlers sales category or evidence that customers are buying trailers to move telehandlers. If Henry’s role includes operating it, he could undertake suitable employer-approved training such as A17; he must not imply current competence.

CUTLERS IDEAS DESK

Think commercially. Test humbly. Bring two questions—not ten prescriptions.

Henry should show that he sees customer problems and can design a low-cost test. His strongest lead idea is careful AI-assisted current-stock activation: faster accurate drafts and more relevant individual follow-up, with management approval, consent and human checking throughout.

“I have two ideas that appear to fit what you already do. May I test the assumptions with you rather than present them as answers?”

CUSTOMER PROBLEM

Good stock can be missed when listings, videos and follow-up are generic or slow.

WHY IT FITS

Henry already has Auto Trader, Caravan Finder and walk-around experience. AI can speed the first draft of accurate listings, video scripts and personalised follow-up while Henry remains responsible for every fact and message.

CHEAPEST PILOT

Choose five priority or ageing units. Verify the specification, then use an approved AI workflow to draft channel-specific listings, walk-around prompts and individual follow-ups for relevant new prospects and consented older enquiries. A person checks every output before use.

MEASURE

Response time, useful conversations, viewing or call requests, quotations, days to sale and attributable sales—not content volume.

RISK FIRST

No invented specifications, automated spam, unapproved customer-data uploads or AI-only decisions. Management approval, lawful contact, consent and human checking come first.

“Would you be open to a small test using AI to speed up accurate current-stock content and personalised follow-up, with every specification and message checked by a person?”

RAISE FIRST

Warm-list stock matching

CUSTOMER PROBLEM

Relevant current stock may not reach people in trusted equine, construction, motorsport and licensed-trade circles.

WHY IT FITS

Henry’s uncle Andrew can open selected equine doors; the family training business created construction, plant and licensed-trade relationships; and Ade has his own former motorsport contacts. Henry can then qualify the need and match only relevant Cutlers stock.

CHEAPEST PILOT

Cutlers selects the priority units. The appropriate family member asks a small number of relevant contacts whether an individual introduction is welcome. Henry follows up one to one, records the requirement and agrees the next action—without a database transfer, yard event or bulk message.

MEASURE

Introductions accepted, useful conversations, requirements identified, quotations, sales and referrals.

RISK FIRST

A warm name is not a lead or a sale. Contact permission, relevance, product accuracy and disciplined follow-up are essential.

“Could we test whether a small number of consented warm introductions helps the right current stock reach people with a genuine requirement?”

EXPLORE

Trailer service + annual inspection plan

CUSTOMER PROBLEM

Customers may defer maintenance until a fault disrupts work, racing, livestock or travel.

WHY IT FITS

A sales-and-hire relationship creates natural service reminders and repeat contact, subject to workshop capacity.

CHEAPEST PILOT

Offer reminders to one product cohort and test a clearly scoped inspection or service booking journey.

MEASURE

Booking rate, repeat visits, remedial work, retention and workshop utilisation.

RISK FIRST

Do not sell a plan until capability, liability, pricing and scheduling are agreed.

“Do you already measure service retention, and would a small annual-reminder pilot help?”

EXPLORE

Use-case accessory bundles

CUSTOMER PROBLEM

Customers can overlook restraints, security, ramps, storage or paddock and yard essentials.

WHY IT FITS

Henry already has attachment-selling evidence; bundles can make a handover safer and more complete.

CHEAPEST PILOT

Build one approved checklist for plant, motorsport and equestrian handovers and track voluntary attachment take-up.

MEASURE

Attachment rate, gross profit where disclosed, returns and customer satisfaction.

RISK FIRST

Every item must suit the actual product and load; a bundle must never replace technical checking.

“Which safe, useful accessories are most often missed at order stage?”

EXPLORE

Older-enquiry reactivation

CUSTOMER PROBLEM

A customer who did not buy last time may now match a different unit in current stock.

WHY IT FITS

Henry understands structured follow-up and can use AI to draft relevant first versions without surrendering judgement or personal contact.

CHEAPEST PILOT

Select one approved group of older, still-contactable enquiries. Match each person to a genuinely relevant current unit, check the record and send a short individual message with an easy opt-out.

MEASURE

Replies, renewed requirements, quotations, unsubscribe rate and attributable sales.

RISK FIRST

Contact only where Cutlers has a lawful basis and approved process; do not upload customer records into unapproved AI tools or send generic bulk messages.

“Could a small, compliant reactivation test connect older enquiries with current stock that now fits their need?”

PARK UNTIL ASKED

Contractor fleet + multi-unit hire review

CUSTOMER PROBLEM

Contractors may need temporary extra capacity across projects without buying every unit.

WHY IT FITS

Cutlers has a hire fleet and construction relationships, but fleet depth, insurance and utilisation are not public.

CHEAPEST PILOT

Interview a handful of warm contractors about peaks, duration and unit types before proposing inventory.

MEASURE

Verified demand days, utilisation potential, rate tolerance and operational cost.

RISK FIRST

Do not recommend fleet purchases without demand, utilisation, maintenance, storage and funding evidence.

“Do contractor peaks create repeat hire gaps worth researching before adding any units?”

Read the filing—do not invent the missing profit.

Stock rose 21.1% in 2025 and represented 85.2% of current assets. That makes relevant enquiries, accurate follow-up and stock movement commercially important. The filing does not disclose turnover, gross margin, operating profit, monthly cash flow or employee commission attainment; those remain interview questions, not conclusions.

VERIFIED GOVERNANCE · NOT A HEADCOUNT

Three active directors. Duties still to discover.

Companies House lists David, Jack and Lesley as the three active directors of Cutlers Sales and Hire Limited, all appointed on 17 August 2015.

The same three people had previously served together as directors of Aldridge Containers Limited. That is a verified continuity of people—not proof that Aldridge was Cutlers’ legal predecessor.

The National Trailer and Towing Association describes Cutlers as a family-run business.

“I can see that Cutlers is publicly described as family-run. How do the three directors divide the day-to-day sales, hire, workshop, finance, administration and handover responsibilities, and where would this role fit between them?”

ACTIVE DIRECTORS

ALL APPOINTED 17 AUGUST 2015

01David Raymond Cutler

02Jack Ronald Cutler

03Lesley Michelle Cutler

Officer filings are not an employee headcount, do not establish how the directors are related and do not show who handles sales, hire, workshop, finance, administration or handovers. Companies House warns that it does not check the accuracy of filed information.

01Stock

£1.206m in 2025 · 85.2% of current assets

WHAT IT MEANS

Trailers and machines waiting to be sold. The cash remains trapped until a unit leaves the yard and payment clears.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Ask how stock age, price reductions and priority units influence lead allocation and commission.

WHY

Management may value fast conversion and aged-stock movement as much as headline unit count.

02Trade creditors

£704,280 due within one year

WHAT IT MEANS

Supplier invoices the business still has to pay. It is not automatically a sign of distress; it can also reflect normal stock funding and terms.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Ask exactly when a sale earns commission: order, deposit, cleared payment, finance payout or delivery.

WHY

A signed order is not necessarily cash in the bank—or commission in Henry’s pay packet.

03Working capital

£514,851 net current assets

WHAT IT MEANS

The money caught between buying stock, preparing it, selling it and collecting the customer’s payment.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Understand deposits, preparation, part exchange, delivery and finance-payout hand-offs.

WHY

In an owner-led stock business, the salesperson may be part of the cash-conversion process, not just the conversation.

04Current ratio

1.57× in 2025

WHAT IT MEANS

Current assets divided by liabilities due within a year. Above one suggests an accounting buffer.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Treat it as context, not as spare cash or proof that commission is affordable.

WHY

Most current assets are stock and cannot settle a bill until sold.

05Quick ratio

0.23× in 2025

WHAT IT MEANS

Cash and near-cash assets compared with short-term liabilities, excluding stock.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Expect disciplined follow-up, deposits and delivery. Do not call the business insolvent from this ratio alone.

WHY

It explains why stock turn and payment speed may matter operationally without proving a crisis.

06Governance snapshot

Three active directors filed at Companies House

WHAT IT MEANS

David Raymond Cutler, Jack Ronald Cutler and Lesley Michelle Cutler are filed as active directors. This is governance information—not proof of current employee headcount, family relationships or operational duties.

WHAT HENRY DOES

Ask who handles leads, listings, workshop liaison, finance, delivery, holiday cover and complaints.

WHY

Cutlers is publicly described as family-run, so clear hand-offs and role boundaries matter; Henry should discover them rather than infer them.

OPEN WITH THIS · 90 SECONDS

“The original CV I sent described my full enquiry-to-handover process, but not the scale, so I emailed an updated version before today. In 2025 I sold 155 caravans, moved roughly £2.7 million of retail stock and reached 25 units in a month against a target of 21. I also grew up around a family haulage business run by my father and grandfather. My grandfather bred horses on a 40-acre farm and kept ATVs, plant, machinery and trailers, so Cutlers’ customers and working environment feel familiar even though I still need to learn your exact products. After haulage, the family moved into training, which created useful construction, plant and licensed-trade relationships; my father has his own motorsport contacts and my uncle Andrew has established equine relationships. I would treat those only as consented doors, then earn the conversation. I have worked every weekend for two years, and I am an ideas person who tests practical responses, measures them and follows through.”

Why: evidence first, an honest product gap second, and a credible learning method third.

LIKELY QUESTIONS

01You call yourself an Ideas Man. How do we know that does not mean distraction?

For me an idea is not a brainstorm; it is a testable response to a customer problem. I write the assumption, start with the cheapest safe pilot, agree the measure and stop or change it if the evidence is weak. Two relevant examples are a human-checked AI test for current-stock listings and follow-up, and matching selected equine, construction, motorsport or hire stock to consented warm introductions from the correct family route. I would own the follow-up rather than just supply the idea.

WHY IT WORKS: Turns a vague personality claim into an evidence-led operating method: spot, connect, test, measure and execute.

02We ask for at least three years in sales and prefer five. You have two—why should we progress you?

03Why Cutlers?

04Give us the short version of your background and why it matters here.

05What was your family’s haulage business?

06You have not sold horseboxes or ATVs professionally. Why should we hire you?

07Tell us about your sales performance.

08Why were those sales figures not on the CV you sent us?

09Can you manage our stock adverts, website listings and product descriptions?

10What about Sage, towing and Saturday work?

11How would you use AI without risking inaccurate specifications or customer trust?

12Why did your last role end?

13What would you do in your first month?

14Would you work self-employed?

KEEP OUT OF THE ROOM

Keep the interview commercially focused.

Side-business or passive-income plans unless a direct conflict question is asked

The legal merits of the former-employer dispute; keep the departure answer brief

Calling the basic salary ‘too low’; ask how historic commission attainment works instead

QUESTIONS HENRY SHOULD ASK

Interesting—not interrogating.

Choose five. Start with the work and performance; ask about status and money after the commercial conversation has substance.

0/15 rehearsed

1What would make you say after 90 days that hiring me was the right decision?

Gets the real success criteria before Henry accepts vague expectations.

2Cutlers is publicly described as family-run. How do the three active directors divide day-to-day sales, hire, workshop, finance, administration and handover responsibilities, and where would this role fit between them?

Tests the real operating structure without guessing family relationships, headcount or duties from Companies House.

3How are enquiries generated and allocated, and what does your strongest salesperson do differently?

Tests lead quality, fairness and the actual route to OTE.

4Which product families and stock units need the most commercial attention now?

Links Henry’s role to today’s business priority without pretending to know the answer.

5Would a measured warm-introduction pilot into construction owner-operators be useful, and which plant or work-trailer lines would you want it to prioritise?

Introduces relationships created through the family training business as a controlled commercial experiment rather than an empty promise.

6Once I had learnt Equi-Trek and Cheval Liberté properly, would a small pilot of consented introductions through my uncle Andrew’s equine relationships be useful, and which current units would you want it to prioritise?

Makes Andrew’s network a major, product-linked advantage while keeping permission, learning and management control ahead of outreach.

7Would consented warm introductions into Ade Whetton’s motorsport contacts be useful for selected current Brian James or Debon stock, or do your present channels already cover that segment well?

Frames Ade’s contact list as an opening to individual conversations—not an event or a promise of orders.

8How is the Fridge and Freezer Trailer currently marketed, and would an opted-in continuity list for licensed premises add value?

Connects a current hire product to a warm customer route without assuming management has overlooked it.

9Would you be open to a small, human-checked AI test on five current or ageing stock units—covering listing drafts, walk-around prompts and relevant follow-up—and judging it by conversations, quotations and sales?

Shows Henry can embrace modern tools while protecting specification accuracy, consent and management control.

10The advert is labelled both full-time and self-employed. Which status is intended in the written agreement, and how much control would Henry have over hours, methods, substitution and work for others?

Forces the legal and commercial reality to be explained rather than accepting a label.

11What is the normal Saturday rota, and how are shows, customer visits, travel time, mileage and time off handled?

Converts a vague availability requirement into the actual working pattern and cost.

12How do you train someone across Brian James, Debon, Equi-Trek, Cheval Liberté, Nugent and CFMOTO?

Shows preparation and tests whether the company has a real learning plan.

13What event earns commission: order, deposit, cleared payment, delivery or finance payout—and how are cancellations and part exchanges treated?

Converts a headline OTE into a pay mechanism Henry can evaluate.

14The advert says £50,000-plus is realistic. How many people achieved it in the last complete year, and what result produced it?

Requests evidence without accusing anyone of exaggeration.

15Is this PAYE employment as advertised? If another status is proposed, what practical freedom, expenses and rate come with it?

Clarifies rights and economics before Henry commits.

REHEARSAL RUNWAY

Confidence is scheduled.

NOW / ONE BUSINESS DAY BEFORE

Email the updated CV on the existing interview thread.

HOW

Use the supplied subject and wording, attach the correctly named PDF, open it once and replace every placeholder before sending.

WHY

It lets Cutlers see the quantified evidence before Henry walks into the room and explains the revision honestly.

0272–24 HOURS

Record the opening and practise likely questions with Ade interrupting and probing.

HOW

Answer without notes, remove apologies and replace vague claims with figures.

WHY

The real interview will not follow a script; confidence comes from a concise, retrievable story.

EVENING BEFORE

Choose five questions, print the evidence figures and confirm route, clothes and arrival time.

HOW

Put one clean page in a folder; stop researching after the checklist is complete.

WHY

It protects sleep and reduces avoidable cognitive load.

04IN THE CAR

Read only the opening, six brands and five chosen questions.

HOW

Breathe, speak the opening once, then put the notes away.

WHY

Last-minute model cramming creates noise, not confidence.

05IN THE ROOM

Listen, answer, prove, then ask one short follow-up.

HOW

Use examples and make brief notes when they describe targets or terms.

WHY

A commercial conversation feels stronger than a memorised performance.

WITHIN TWO HOURS

Send a concise thank-you and restate the first-90-day value proposition.

HOW

Reference one specific detail from the discussion and one concrete next step.

WHY

It demonstrates the follow-up discipline Henry is selling.

PAYE OR SELF-EMPLOYED?

Easy to register. Important to get right.

PAYE FIRST

The advert says full-time and permanent. Henry should begin by asking for the employment contract, pension, holiday, notice and commission schedule.

CONTRACTOR ONLY IF GENUINE

A self-employed label must match real freedom, risk and working practice. Registration does not make an employee-like arrangement genuine.

SIDE PROJECTS STAY PRIVATE

Being employed and self-employed at the same time is possible. Henry should not volunteer outside plans in interview; if asked directly, answer honestly and confirm no conflict, no competition and no use of Cutlers’ time or information.

01Resolve the advert’s contradiction

HOW

Ask whether the offer is PAYE employment or a genuine contract for services, then request the matching written terms, holiday, pension, notice, hours and commission schedule.

WHY

The supplied Indeed advert is labelled both full-time and self-employed; Henry should not guess which one Cutlers intends.

02If contractor status appears, pause

HOW

Request the written contract before agreeing a start date or commercial rate.

WHY

The word ‘self-employed’ does not decide legal or tax status.

03Map the real control

HOW

Write down who controls hours, location, method, holiday, equipment, substitution, pricing and other clients.

WHY

Status follows the real arrangement as well as the paperwork.

04Run HMRC CEST

HOW

Use the official tool with accurate facts and save the result and answers.

WHY

It gives HMRC’s view for tax when the facts are correct and remain correct.

05Price the lost protections

HOW

Value unpaid holiday, pension, downtime, insurance, expenses, bookkeeping and payment delay before comparing rates.

WHY

£27,500 invoiced is not economically equal to £27,500 PAYE.

06Negotiate the commercial deal

HOW

Agree guaranteed rate, commission event, expenses, payment days, notice, liability, insurance and genuine freedom in writing.

WHY

A contractor carries business risk and needs commercial compensation for it.

07Register and keep records

HOW

If gross sole-trader income exceeds £1,000 in a tax year, register for Self Assessment through GOV.UK; invoice, retain receipts and reserve tax cash.

WHY

Easy registration creates reporting duties; gross receipts are not spendable net income.

Working guide—not formal legal or tax advice.

Employment status depends on the contract and what happens in practice. Henry should use HMRC’s CEST tool and obtain professional advice before accepting a disputed contractor arrangement or relying on this summary for a tax return.
